THANKS(FOR)GIVING

Any of my clients will tell you that I stress the importance of regular communication with your donors and sponsors throughout the year - not just when you are asking for a donation or a sponsorship. This is a critical part of building professional relationships that will grow over time.

Would you like a way to stand out? Have you ever considered sending Thanksgiving cards to your donors and sponsors instead of (or in addition to) Christmas cards? If you want to remind them that their dollars are making a difference, the Thanksgiving holiday is the perfect opportunity for that!

Why? Because sending a Thanksgiving card is a less predictable gesture, often less expensive, and expressing gratitude for someone's generosity aligns so nicely with this holiday.

Who Should Get a Thanksgiving Card?

The first question is who you should send your cards to. You could send cards to all of your donors or select a special group. For example:

  • top donors

  • sponsors

  • monthly givers

  • legacy donors

  • board members

  • committee members

  • campaign contributors

... you get the idea!

How to Create a Meaningful Card

Don't worry about being elaborate. Open with a sincere personal message, give a genuine compliment, thank them (for something specific, if possible) and let them know they are truly cherished and appreciated.

Remember, the most important thing is your message inside. Instead of a generic, pre-signed card that could be for anyone, writing a special, handwritten note (it can be brief!) will make it personalized and heartfelt.

Another idea is having the card come from someone else such as a student, a patient, a volunteer or another beneficiary. This can be a great way to show the impact of their donation first-hand.

What Should I Say?

To help you get started, here are some ideas for phrases you might want to include in your messages. These are for you to use, combine or change as needed to create a greeting that works for you!

  • During this season of gratitude, we are truly humbled by your tremendous support

  • Your generosity and partnership enables us to …

  • Your valuable contributions have ...

  • As we count our blessings you are at the top!

  • Thank you for trusting us

  • Thank you for helping our organization grow and prosper

  • You are key to our success!

  • We absolutely couldn't have done it without you

  • Thank you for your contributions and for a terrific year!

  • Thank you for all your support

  • We want you to know how much we appreciate you

  • Thank you for making the world a better place

  • With sincere thanks and warmest wishes

  • May you be blessed in return

  • May your blessings be multiplied

  • May you enjoy a cheerful time with your loved ones

  • Wishing you a very happy Thanksgiving and a joyful holiday season

  • Wishing you a fall season filled with abundance and joy

  • Wishing you a Thanksgiving overflowing with peace, love and laughter

  • Wishing you and yours a blessed holiday season

  • Wishing you a harvest of blessings, good health and good times
